Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a treatment that lightens and removes stains from your teeth to reveal the brighter color underneath. The most popular cosmetic treatment in dentistry, teeth whitening can take years off your smile for a more youthful appearance.

What causes tooth discoloration?

Some of the most common factors that lead to yellow teeth and tooth discoloration include:

Food/drinks

Many foods and drinks can cause a buildup of tooth stains that are difficult to remove without whitening products. Coffee, tea, red wine, sugary sodas, dark berries, and soy sauce can all stain your teeth.

Age

As you age, your protective enamel on the outside of your teeth naturally thins and exposes the darker dentin underneath.

Genetics

Many people are simply born with thin tooth enamel and have naturally darker teeth due to exposed dentin.

Medications

Certain medications, especially antibiotics, chemotherapy, and antihistamines, can cause tooth discoloration.

How does in-office teeth whitening work?

Dr. Froum offers in-office, or chairside, teeth whitening to dramatically brighten your smile in as little as one hour.

First, he applies a high concentration of bleaching solution on your teeth after placing a protective barrier on the gums and lips. Next, Dr. Froum refreshes the solution every 5-10 minutes to keep the active component bleaching.

He also offers the GLO™ whitening system, which utilizes heat and light technology to amplify your results without causing sensitivity.

In many cases, the GLO whitening system produces better results than alternative solutions, but Dr. Froum will evaluate your teeth and gums to determine which treatment is right for you.

How does at-home teeth whitening work?

If you don’t want to come in for an in-office whitening session, Dr. Froum can create custom-made whitening trays for you to use at home. At your first visit, Dr. Froum takes impressions of your teeth to create your trays.

After you pick up your custom trays, you wear them for about one hour a day with a bleaching solution until you achieve your desired results.

Teeth whitening is a quick, affordable way to transform your smile without extensive dental work or downtime. To learn more about the whitening options available at Stuart J. Froum, DDS, call the office or book an appointment online.
