Surgical Treatments
Crown Lengthening
Our office specializes in periodontal procedures which serve as the foundation for beautiful and long-lasting restorative procedures. In order for the gums to properly heal against the tooth in a healthy manner, there must be enough room between the end of the crown or filling and the bone that supports the tooth. This space allows the gums to attach to the tooth properly.
A tooth that is broken or decayed below the gum line is difficult if not impossible for your dentist to restore properly and often times has to be removed. If enough space is not present, the filling or cap could trap bacteria, leading to both bone loss and/or the return of decay.
Crown Lengthening is a simple surgical procedure in which Dr. Froum adjusts the position of the gum around the affected tooth, thereby providing more tooth exposure for your dentist to anchor the restoration of choice. A functional crown lengthening will help you regain a beautiful smile, and allow you to eat and speak with comfort and confidence.

After Crown Lengthening

Before Crown Lengthening
A purely esthetic crown lengthening procedure to correct a “gummy” smile or short teeth is often referred to as cosmetic Gum Contouring. This is often done prior to veneers or laminates to help produce proper teeth length and shape and in conjunction with the laminates produce an esthetic and natural smile.
If you have any of these problems, please contact our New York Periodontist Dr. Stuart Froum in his Manhattan office at 212.586.4209 for a free consultation and for more information regarding crown lengthening.
Pocket Reduction Procedures
Normal, healthy gums have small pockets around each tooth. The bacteria and infection associated with gum disease (periodontitis) causes these pockets to become deeper, trapping more bacteria and causing more bleeding, redness and bad breath. When the pockets become too deep for scaling and root planing, a Pocket Depth Reduction procedure is often a solution. During a Pocket Depth Reduction procedure, Dr. Froum removes the disease-causing bacteria and infection. Dr. Froum will then thoroughly clean and smooth the tooth surfaces. He will then, if necessary, reshape the gum and bone and place a germ killing material (antimicrobial). This will allow the gums to heal, resulting in smaller, healthier pockets.
