Bad Breath Treatments
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common concern for millions of people, affecting about 25% of the US population. In about 85% of the cases, bad breath is the result of bacterial activity in the mouth. Reasons for oral malodor include periodontal disease, poor oral hygiene, faulty dental restorations, and debris buildup on the tongue. Proper oral care, including treatment of periodontal disease (oftentimes just a good professional cleaning), repair of cavities and correction of poor restorations will in most cases result in immediate relief of the problem. Periodontal treatment reduces “pockets” (see Periodontal Disease) which will eliminate the areas where malodor producing bacteria reside. Other causes of undesirable mouth odor may originate in the lungs or sinuses. People with chronic sinus problems may have halitosis. Diabetes, anemia, and liver problems all produce distinct mouth malodors, which can be diagnosed with proper experience. Diets and certain foods can contribute to mouth odor. Other foods – green vegetables, for example, that contain natural chlorophyll – will remove mouth odor. Certain drugs which dry the mouth may contribute to bad breath. If you suffer from bad breath, Dr. Froum and his staff will diagnose the cause of your specific bad breath problem and provide the proper treatment. They will teach you the home care procedures that will result in lasting pleasant breath.
